Introduction

Daniel Goldstone is a clinical psychologist who recently relocated to Dublin. The move sparked a desire to take his business to the next level.

Daniel had been using a generic Squarespace template for his online presence when he decided it was time for change. In order to increase leads and improve conversions I worked with Daniel to develop a creative strategy that included a redesign of his website.

"Working with Greg was a pleasure from start to finish. He was professional and time-conscious, and had a clearly thought-out process to conceptualise my website’s design and layout. He was open to my suggestions and feedback and made me feel like we were working on the site as a team. Greg made sure that I felt happy with all aspects of the design before we went live, and patiently explained his creative process and design decisions when I had questions. I could not recommend working with Greg more."

The Problem

Outdated & Generic

Daniel’s website was created using an outdated, generic template that has become commonplace in the field of therapy. Being generic, his website failed to accurately reflect his distinctive character and unique value. He did not stand out amongst his peers.

Furthermore, Daniel’s outdated template lacked interaction and a contemporary look and feel. It appeared dormant and inactive. Though it may have served a purpose in the past, it was beginning to appear like a website that had been abandoned.

Finally, while information was available, it was not structured for easy reading and information that Daniel took for granted had been overlooked; such as a step-by-step guide illustrating the process from inquiry to first booking.

Summary

  • Outdated, generic template

  • No interaction or contemporary energy

  • Appears dormant and inactive

  • Text heavy and lacking structure

Research

Where we are

To kick off the design process I set up a Figjam and collected examples of the typical websites that belong to other clinical psychologists in Daniel’s field of work.

The purpose of this exercise was to establish the status quo, research common pitfalls and demonstrate what we wanted to move away from.

Where we want to go

I then put together a collection of inspiring websites representing what we generally wanted to move toward.

Though there wasn’t a single website we wanted to emulate, this collection helped us establish a creative direction that would inform further research and conversations.

Inspiration & reference

Finally I created third moodboard with specific examples of inspiration which included screenshots showcasing interesting layouts, colours, iconography, imagery and various other design elements that would inform the user interface for Daniel's new website.

Design Audit

A detailed analysis

In between research I conducted a basic design audit of Daniel’s website. I recorded ideas for improvement using sticky notes that I could easily refer back to.

Questions & Conversations

To better understand Daniel’s needs and goals, I created a questionnaire which he answered during one of our meetings.

Additionally we went over problems encountered by people looking for therapy.

Daniel’s answers to my questionnaire, the insights gained from discussing problems statements and the conversations Dan and I had about the visual research informed the goals that would ultimately drive the redesign.

Goals Included

  • Introduce Daniel and his value offering in 5-10 seconds so the the user begins their journey informed

  • Demonstrate Dan’s professionalism and character with a fresh, contemporary, interactive design that feels active and up to date

  • Create a strong sense of trust and transparency with social proofing, thoughtful structure and a positive reading experience

  • Make it effortless to contact Dan and book your first free session.

Ideation

Wireframing

To establish the structure of the website and explore hierachy, balance and white space, I created a basic wireframe which became a blue print for the final designs.

Final Designs

The Finished Product

The final design of Daniel's website reflects a refreshed, authentic brand, a focus on Daniel's personality, a contemporary approach to imagery and layout, engaging, easy-to-read typography and social proofing in the form of testimonials.

Buttons are interactive and a nuanced touch of motion makes for an enjoyable viewing experience when exploring the site. A striking yet balanced colour palette is distinctive and performs an important role in directing our eye to important information and calls to action.

The result is a responsive, engaging website that enables Dan to focus on promoting his practice with confidence knowing that his website stands out amongst his peers, is informed by current design trends, and is designed to optimally communicate his value offering.

Highlights

Rounded Corners
Rounded corners lend themselves to a calm, accessible visual experience, particularly in the field of pyschology.

Icons

Icons guide the user and balance out the text.

Dropdowns

In order to create more visual relief in a text heavy website dropdowns were employed. Users are now able to toggle the information they'd like to read on certain pages.

Interaction

Interactive buttons and dropdowns, not to mention motion, make the website feel active and contemporary and add immense value to the presentation of Daniel's services.

Animated icons not only add visual appeal to the CTAs but help communicate what the CTAs are nudging the user to do.

An animated green pulse on the landing page makes it seem like Daniel's website is actively being used. It also encourages users to contact Daniel before he's fully booked.
